Embody mythological legends through this unique yoga class where story flows into asana practice. Experience the power and courage of Hanuman as he evolves from a young mischievous monkey to a humble and selfless friend. You will learn to outwit sea monsters and jump across the ocean, all the while working towards the Hanumanasana, the splits pose. We may even run into a few mermaids along the way.
Take time to connect with the lovely and healing plants that grow all around us. Beginning with a gentle walking meditation, we will sink deeply into our own roots and learn how to really listen. Learn the many ways to integrate herbs into your life by developing nourishing rituals. We will also experiment with simple at-home spa treatments, such as foot soaks, massage with infused oils and facial steams. Leave with knowledge on what herbs will work for your skin and hair types and how to make your own beauty products that are inexpensive and wonderful for you and the earth.
Find the courage to go upside down. The benefits of inversions range from relieving leg and foot pain, strengthening your core, and simply experiencing life from a different perspective. Explore the upside down in headstand, handstand, and shoulderstand. There will be modifications and substitutions offered for all experience levels.
You will receive a small handmade journal (made by your lovely hosts!) to serve as your journal for the weekend. Once we hand it to you, you are free to do with it as you please! I will will be leading a guided journaling workshop to give you some ideas of how to connect with your journal–some seeds to plant and see what might grow out of it. Inspired by my favorite journalists and artists (see our Resources Page), and my own journals, I will pose some thoughts, ideas, questions, and games to play. How you respond is up to you. You may immediately begin writing and hardly be able to stop. You may sit with your journal and stare off into the water or use it as a pillow to stare up at the clouds. You may throw your journal down in the mud and stomp on it.
One of the fundamental teachings of yoga is that we are all one, so it’s no stretch to reach out to one, two, three or 100 more yogis to deepen this practice and discover that through connection and support, our personal edges are well within reach. Experience tandem vinyasa flow, partner balance, partner traction, grounding, trust and creativity in this playful practice. Partner yoga is suitable for anyone with basic body awareness and an adventurous spirit.
Dynamising the Senses: Awareness and Connection through Play
The meat of this workshop comes directly from selections of Agosto Boal’s Games for Actors and Non-Actors. The garnishes and dessert will come from my own invigorating games. After discussing the ways our bodies and current modes of connection feel restricted and oppressed daily, we will use active games to awaken our senses that may have been neglected for a while. The intent is to ground ourselves in our senses and grow in our awareness with others. We will explore three of Boal’s categories of games:
-Feeling what we touch
-Listening to what we hear
-Seeing what we look at
With these categories in mind, we will dive into a variety of games exploring each theme. Followed by discussion and animated by our journaling work, we will dynamise and activate our senses as a group and as individuals. Seems pretty basic, right? Like simply remembering to breathe? Remember? Breathe. You will be surprised by how long you have been holding your breath until you finally inhale.
Open your hips and spine for an invigorating flow practice. Deep twists stimulate digestion and help flush out toxins. Hip stretching reduces stress and increases mobility. In this workshop you will open your hips and twist deeper in standing poses, as well as exploring targeted seated poses.
Thai massage is an extension of the partner yoga practice that invites each practitioner’s gifts of sensitivity and receptivity to shine. Students will learn and practice honest, clear, compassionate communication to build the foundation of partnership. We will draw upon the natural forces of gravity and “metta”, loving kindness, to encourage the body to let go of fear and tension. The flow of giving and receiving, honoring and accepting, inhaling and exhaling will take both yogis into a new place of union and bliss.
